By Landsort's standards a very dissapointing day. I arrived at the island just after sunrise to discover it shrouded in thick mist after a low lying bank of fog had drifted in over the entire area. Frustratingly, many migrants were flying over calling unseen. Conditions made observation and photography impossible until 10.30am when it lifted, by which time passage had slowed down markedly. Light northerly winds and bright conditions meant that few migrants had made landfall and it was a really quiet day. A highlight was a strong passage of Sparrowhawk overhead with over 100 birds counted as they dashed south. Othe migrants overhead included a Parrot Crossbill, Brambling, Chaffinch, Redpoll, Siskin, Reed Bunting, Skylark, Meadow Pipit, a Bullfinch, Tree Sparrow. In addition about 50 Goldcrest fed on the islands southerly tip along with Chiff Chaff's, Blackcaps's and the resident landbirds.
Plans are made to come back in October for a few days birding when I expect the birding will live up to its true potential on what is a fantastic migration watchpoint..
